A Fond Farewell to an Aussie Superstar

Monday, 5 March 2018

Following the announcement by Mick Fanning last week that he intends to retire from the World Tour this year, we thought we’d take a look back through our archives and reminisce over Mick’s UK appearances.

You may not believe it, but Mick actually competed at Fistral Beach in Newquay back in 2000 at the Rip Curl Pro, now known as Boardmasters. It was one of Mick’s first events on the ASP (now WSL) Qalifying Series. Since then, in a career spanning 17 years, Mick has risen to the top to become a 3-time world champion and one of the most popular surfers in the world.

Back then, Mick competed alongside Andy Irons, Fred Patacchia, Russell Winter, Taylor Knox, Joel Parkinson and many more of the world’s top pro’s when he was just 18! His final result was a joint 7th place with UK’s Russell Winter.

Mick Fanning was an international idol to all surfers and one of the most well like characters on the tour. He will be missed by all – good on ya Mick!
